This book is an up-to-date comprehensive resource on the names (scientific, English and vernacular) of the mammals of South Asia. This work is first of its kind that deals with explanation of names of mammals at the species and subspecies level.

This book explains the scientific names (all given and available names) of 524 species of mammals occurring, or known to occur, in South Asia from the countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives.

This book consists of 4 chapters – Chapter 1 deals with the updated checklist of mammals of South Asia, Chapter 2 deals with the scientific nomenclature and its understanding, Chapter 3 provides the explanation of generic and specific names along with the synonyms, and Chapter 4 is a dictionary of names in alphabetical order for easy tracking by the reader. Additionally, the list of languages used in autochtony and vernacular names are provided as an appendix. A detailed list of 545 published references dealing with published species descriptions is also provided as a bibliography.

Each binomial name of mammal species dealt with in Chapter 3 of this book is followed by the name of the authority and year of description, accepted English name, and explanation of generic name, followed by explanation of the specific name, general distribution, explanation of subspecific names, other English name/s for nominate form and/or synonyms, and some common vernacular names. Chapter 4 also includes, besides the Latin generic and specific names dealt with in Chapter 3, explanations of synonyms listed under recognized species.
